What to Expect

Your Night on Haad Rin Beach

Everything first-timers need to know — from the first bucket to sunrise.

01
The Vibe
Multiple stages run simultaneously across the beach — from thumping house and techno to reggae and chill zones. No single main stage, no wristbands — you roam freely between sounds all night.

The crowd is international. On any given night you'll find people from 80+ countries dancing on the same sand. UV body paint stalls line the beach — getting painted is practically a ritual.

02
When & How Long
Gates open at 6 PM, with the party running through the night until sunrise. The real energy builds after 10 PM. Peak hours are 10 PM – 3 AM. The party doesn't end at sunrise — it fades slowly as the beach empties at dawn.

Most people stay 6–10 hours. There's no curfew. Return boats to Koh Samui run at 3 AM and 6 AM.

Drinks & Budget
The iconic bucket cocktail — a sand bucket filled with spirits, mixer, and ice — is the unofficial drink of the Full Moon Party. Expect to pay 200–350 THB per bucket. Beer runs 80–120 THB.

Entry is 200 THB at the gate — you'll receive a wristband on arrival. A realistic night budget is 1,000–2,500 THB per person.

Stay Safe
Leave valuables at your hotel. Bring a waterproof pouch for your phone and a small amount of cash only.

Never swim at night after drinking — the current on Haad Rin beach is deceptively strong. Don't ride a scooter after drinking. Shared pickup trucks run back to your hotel all night.

Getting There

Koh Phangan has no airport — here's how to reach the island from anywhere in Thailand.

Where to Stay

For the Full Moon Party, most visitors stay on Koh Phangan — but Koh Samui is another popular choice, just a 30-minute speedboat away.

Select your island below.

Koh Phangan
Stay on the party island
Pros
  • Most convenient — party is on Haad Rin beach, you can walk there
  • No need to rush back for a boat — stay until sunrise
  • Full island-party atmosphere from the moment you arrive
Cons
  • Limited choice — mostly bungalows and hostels, fewer hotel options
  • Prices spike hard during party week, with minimum-stay requirements
  • No airport — getting here requires bus + ferry or flight via Samui
  • Ferries don't run every hour — plan your arrival carefully
Tips
  • Stay in Haad Rin — you can walk straight to the party
  • Book at least 1 month ahead — or 3–4 months for peak season (end of year)
  • Check minimum stay conditions before booking — some require 3+ nights
  • Staying in Haad Rin? Book your ferry to Haad Rin Pier — ferries from Samui go there directly, saving you a 30-min songthaew ride from Thong Sala
  • Staying elsewhere on the island? Book to Thong Sala Pier (main pier) — then take a songthaew to Haad Rin, ~30 min
Koh Samui
30-minute speedboat to the party
Popular alternative — stay on Samui and take a speedboat direct to Haad Rin on party night (~30 min). No need to sleep on Phangan.
Pros
  • Direct airport (USM) — easiest way in, fly and check in same day
  • Easy access to Koh Phangan — regular ferries run daily, and speedboat direct to Haad Rin on party night
  • Far more choice — hostels to 5-star resorts, every budget
  • More activities: diving, spas, shopping, day tours
Cons
  • Must take a boat to the party — plan your timing
  • Speedboat tickets sell out quickly — book 1–2 weeks ahead
Tips
  • Stay near Chaweng, Bo Phut, Bang Rak, or Choeng Mon — close to the boat pier
  • If you're staying far from the pier, factor in taxi costs and extra travel time
  • Book speedboat tickets when you book your hotel — don't wait

About

History

From a bonfire on the beach to a global phenomenon — 40 years of full moon madness.

1985

The first party — A small group of backpackers gathered on Haad Rin beach under the full moon. No tickets, no stages, no agenda — just music, fire, and the sea. Nobody planned it to last.

1990s

Word spread fast across the backpacker trail. Attendance grew from dozens to thousands. Fire shows and bucket cocktails became iconic rituals — invented here, copied everywhere.

2000s

The party went global — featured in guidebooks, travel shows, and films. Up to 30,000 people began attending each month from over 80 countries. Haad Rin became a pilgrimage.

2010s

Multiple stages, international DJs, foam parties, and UV body paint turned it into a full production. A rite of passage for a generation of world travellers.

Today

Still held every full moon. Still on the same beach. Still free-spirited — the original beach party that inspired a thousand imitations and outlasted all of them.
