Koh Phangan ยท Beyond the Party

10 Things to Do on Koh Phangan

Already on the island but the party hasn't started yet? Here's everything you should do before the full moon rises.

01

Pre-Party Week โ€” Events During Full Moon Week

The fun on Koh Phangan doesn't start on the night of the Full Moon โ€” it starts days earlier. Two events you need to know about:

Waterfall Festival โ€” held 2 days before the Full Moon, deep in the jungle beside a waterfall and river. Multiple stages featuring House, Melodic Techno, and Progressive House. The sound of music mixed with running water in the middle of the forest is an atmosphere unlike anything else. Gates open at 9:00 PM until sunrise.

Jungle Experience โ€” held the night before the Full Moon in Ban Tai jungle. Two stages (Dragon Stage: House & Techno / Bass Stage: Drum & Bass), fire shows, and laser lights cutting through the rainforest canopy until dawn. One of the most immersive party environments in Southeast Asia.

Tip: Check schedules and buy tickets in advance โ€” online prices are always cheaper than the door.
02

Snorkeling at Koh Ma โ€” Walk Across the Sandbar

Koh Ma is a small island on the northwest coast of Koh Phangan, connected to Mae Haad Beach by a natural sandbar you can walk across at low tide. The surrounding waters are a protected marine area, home to colorful coral, clownfish, sea turtles, and large schools of tropical fish. One of the easiest and most accessible snorkeling spots in the Gulf of Thailand โ€” no boat, no tour, no entry fee.

Tip: It's free โ€” just bring your own mask and fins, or rent them on the beach for a small fee. Check a tide chart before heading out for the best conditions.
03

Diving Sail Rock โ€” Koh Phangan's Crown Jewel

Sail Rock is an open-water granite pinnacle rising from the seabed between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, and it's one of the best dive sites in the entire Gulf of Thailand. Expect massive schools of barracuda, giant groupers, batfish, and barrel sponges clinging to the rock face. From March to May, whale sharks pass through on their migratory route โ€” one of the most sought-after underwater encounters in Asia. Dive boats leave directly from Koh Phangan and reach the site in under an hour.

Tip: Best suited for Advanced Open Water divers (18โ€“30m depth). Multiple dive schools on the island run dedicated Sail Rock trips.
04

Day Trip to Koh Tao & Koh Nang Yuan

Koh Tao is less than an hour from Koh Phangan by speedboat, and it's widely regarded as one of the world's best snorkeling and diving destinations. Think sea turtles, blacktip reef sharks, and some of the clearest water in the Gulf. While you're there, stop at Koh Nang Yuan โ€” a tiny island where three beaches converge at a single point, creating a viewpoint that's firmly on every traveler's bucket list. A full-day trip from Koh Phangan is easy to arrange and well worth it.

Tip: Most full-day tours include lunch, snorkeling equipment, and a stop at the Koh Nang Yuan viewpoint.
05

Ang Thong National Marine Park โ€” 42 Islands, One Day

Day trips to Ang Thong National Marine Park are also available from Koh Phangan. Limestone peaks, an emerald lagoon hidden inside a crater, crystal-clear turquoise water, and unspoiled jungle โ€” all in one place. Highlights include kayaking through sea caves, snorkeling the reefs, and hiking to the panoramic viewpoint on Koh Wua Talap for one of the most jaw-dropping views in Thailand.

Tip: The park closes every year from 1 November to 15 December. Check the dates before booking.
06

Hiking Khao Ra or Bottle Beach โ€” The Island's Best Views

Two trails worth knowing:

Khao Ra โ€” the highest peak on Koh Phangan at 627 meters. Allow 1.5โ€“2.5 hours each way through dense jungle and a stream trail. On a clear day the viewpoint reveals the entire island, with Koh Samui and Koh Tao visible in the distance. Entrance fee 20 THB (includes a small bottle of water).

Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) โ€” hike from Haad Khom through the jungle (2 km / ~1โ€“2 hours each way) or along the coastal trail (3 km, longer). The reward is one of the most secluded white-sand beaches on the island โ€” barely touched, rarely crowded. If you don't feel like hiking back, longtail boats run from Chaloklum.

Tip: Start before 8:00 AM. Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person and wear proper closed-toe shoes โ€” no flip-flops.
07

Explore the Island by Scooter โ€” The Thong Nai Pan Road Is a Must

The road from Thong Sala climbing east across the hills to the island's east coast is one of the most beautiful rides in Thailand โ€” sea views, green jungle, and quiet bays tucked away at every turn. Rent a scooter for 200โ€“300 THB/day and explore at your own pace. Make sure to stop at Thong Nai Pan Yai & Noi โ€” twin bays on the northeast coast with some of the clearest, calmest water on the island.

Tip: Some sections are very steep. If you're not comfortable on a scooter, take a taxi โ€” it's not worth the risk.
08

Sunset at Zen Beach โ€” Hippie Vibes by the Sea

Zen Beach in the Sri Thanu area on the west coast is where the whole island gathers every evening to watch the sun go down. Expect live DJs, musicians, and yogis practicing Acro Yoga on the sand as golden light fills the sky. The highlight of the week is Friday evening's Drum Circle โ€” a spontaneous gathering of drummers and dancers that takes over the beach with infectious energy. Some evenings also feature a fire show. No ticket, no entry fee โ€” just show up.

Tip: Arrive by 5:30 PM to find a good spot. Food and drinks are available at Grasshopper Bar on the beach.
09

Yoga & Wellness Retreat โ€” Reset Before the Party

Koh Phangan has built a global reputation as one of Asia's top wellness destinations. The Sri Thanu area on the west coast โ€” known locally as "Yoga Hill" โ€” is packed with studios and retreat centers offering everything from drop-in classes (300โ€“400 THB) to multi-day detox programs. Whether you're resetting before the Full Moon or recovering after, the island's wellness scene is world-class.

Tip: Morning classes typically start at 7:30โ€“9:00 AM. Book in advance through each studio's website.
10

Night Markets โ€” Thong Sala & Chaloklum

For a taste of local life away from the party scene, the island's night markets deliver. Fresh seafood, local snacks, handmade souvenirs, live music, and an atmosphere that feels 180 degrees from Haad Rin.

Thong Sala โ€” hosts a market every Saturday evening.

Chaloklum โ€” a traditional fishing village on the north coast, with its market every Sunday.

Tip: Chaloklum market sits right on the bay โ€” combine it with the sunset for a perfect evening.

Koh Phangan is so much more than one night. However many days you have on the island, these activities will fill every one of them โ€” before and after the Full Moon Party.
